If you're a parent (or older sibling or babysitter or - you get the idea) who is already familiar with the concept of the popular "sippy cup," it's about time you learned about "Sili" cups.
The Silikids company was started in 2006 by two friends who also happened to be mothers. As concerns about toxic materials grew (BPA, products made in China and the like), the company was formed with the idea of producing safe, clean, hygienic accessories for children made from silicone. Silicone was already used in a number of common products including bottle nipples and pacifiers, and was ideal in that it is resistant to bacteria thanks to its non-porous nature and is also resistant to high temperatures. Silicone is also hypo-allergenic, free from bisphenol A, recyclable and dishwasher-safe. In short, the perfect material for parents concerned about their child's health and the environment.
Silikids makes a variety of products including Silibibs, "Silipads" (cotton kneepads with silicone padding for crawling babies and toddlers) and glass bottles encased in "Siliskin" to provide your child with good grip while protecting their hands (and yours!) from heat and preventing the bottle from breaking if dropped. The products are available in a range of bright, kid-friendly colors and are offered at very parent-friendly prices.
Silikids is also preparing to launch their latest product next month, the Siliskin Glass, a six-ounce drinking glass that helps kids transition from drinking from a bottle to drinking from a "big kid" cup. The glass is of course, non-toxic, and the Siliskin on the outside offers the same benefits as it does for the bottles, reducing the chances of the glass slipping from your child's hand and breaking on the floor. The cup will retail for $7.95 and will come in aqua and lime colors.
