Leafy Green once shared that the term "tiffin" refers to the Indian English custom of enjoying a light lunch or a snack enjoyed in-between meals. In fact, it's such a popular custom that a special lunchbox was even designed to tote the lunch to work (or school or play) in.
A tiffin carrier isn't like the typical lunch box your child takes to school each day or the paper bag you yourself might stuff your food into for work. It's mulitple compartments allow you to separate your food be it the tradition Indian favorites of curry, rice or vegetables, or your own spin on lunch which could include stew or a nice summery salad made with locally-grown vegetables. The added bonus of choosing a tiffin over the aforementioned paper bag is that you can use the same storage containers every day, minimzing the amount of waste your lunch produces, unlike the first time your paper bag gets a bit damp and becomes useless....
Tiffin carriers are just made with a one-size-fits-all mentality. So which Tiffin is right for you?
2-Tier Tiffin & Carrier Bag Combo - A two-tier tiffin carrier holds all the essentials, while a carrier bag made from recycled cotton provides a hands-free way to carry your lunch. It comes with a Sidekick (see below for explanation) and even has a handy side pocket to hold your utensils (it goes without saying these should be reusable too!). The cotton scraps used to make the bag are gathered from recycling sites in Ghaziabad, India.
2- or 3-Tier Stainless Steel Food Carrier - It may sound heavy, but this stainless steel lunchbox is very lightweight and easy to carry and clean. Iit also comes with a Sidekick and the lid can even be used as a plate. You can choose between the 2- or 3-tier versions, depending on how many courses you want to take with you. A couple of helpful hints: the top container is best for liquids, and if you're just looking to take a small snack somewhere, the self-latching top container allows you to take just one portion of the lunchbox with you.
2- or 3-Tier Action Pack - The pack offers the same convenient 2- or 3-tier stainless steel box, but the set also comes with a bamboo utensil set and a Sidekick. You can choose between five utensil set colors, and also have the option of buying the action pack with one of the aforementioned carrier bags.
Sidekicks - So what are these Sidekicks that come with most of the carriers? They're separate containers that come in two sizes (small and large) to hold any extras you may want to bring along such as dressings, soups or nuts. Parents with small children may want to use them to bring along cereal, berries or baby food. The Sidekicks come with most of the carriers, but can also be ordered separately.
