If you love the excitement of having something new to wear, you're probably familiar with the conundrum of opening your closet door (or doors) and sighing in discontent as you flip past the familiar jeans, skirts and sweaters. Call it closet boredom or whatever you want, but chances are there are a lot of items that go unworn because you can't remember why you bought them in the first place or they don't quite fit anymore.
You can breathe new life into your wardrobe without spending any money and without sending any of those unworn items to a landfill. Oh, and did we mention you'll have a great excuse to throw a party? Clothes swapping parties are the latest and greatest idea that let you get together with your friends and do something fun that can help minimize your environmental impact.
What and how?
Planning one is simple. Gather some friends and tell them to bring along clothing and accessories they haven't worn or used in the past two years, but are still in good condition and that are clean. Put all of the items up for grabs on display so everyone has a chance to view them and then start "shopping." Each person can take turns and pick out one thing they would like to try on. Anything not snapped up at the end of the evening can be donated to a local homeless shelter or charity.
When?
Just prior to the start of a new season, tell everyone to purge their closets of the clothing applicable to that season. You'll be able to update your closet without even having to set foot in a mall. Cast-off tank tops and skirts are perfect for spring and summer, while warm cozy sweaters can be up for grabs right as the temperature dips.
Where?
Alternate locations. Everyone can take a turn playing hostess (or host!) and serving some wine and treats to enjoy during the party. You'll have the chance to visit and leave with some new finds. A full-length mirror is a must no matter where the party is held.
Who?
Anyone you think would want to participate. Do keep sizing in mind however. If you and your friends range from sizes 12 to 14, your size six friend may feel embarrassed and out of place.
Twist on the idea
If you and your social circle are parents, consider doing a clothing swap for your kids. Chances are everyone will have a few things their young ones have outgrown, some with hardly the occasion to wear them. Somebody else may be able to benefit from that too-small sweater or the tight basketball shoes. Again, this can be especially effective if done seasonally to prepare for the impending weather.
