Simply put, a staple crop is any crop that is common enough in diets around the world to require signifiant land is dedicated to growing these foods.
While only a small portion of these crops actually goes into making into the cereal you eat everyday, they are commonly referred to as cereal grains. The majority of cereal grains are grasses that are especially grown for their edible brans or fruit seeds.
Common staple crops you'll find in your breakfast cereal include corn (or maize), millet, oats, rice, rye, sorghum, soybean and wheat.
