While we certainly won't advocate wearing your underwear multiple days in a row to reduce the amount of energy and water used for your laundry (that's your own personal decision), there are other ways to mitigate the impact cleaning your clothes - and your home - has on the environment.
Green: You may not love the idea of taking cold showers in the morning, but your laundry probably isn't as sensitive to the temperature as your are. Change the settings on your washing machine to use cold water on all loads of laundry except for sheets and towels. And wait until you have a full load of laundry compiled before running it through the machine.
Greener: Purchase one of these air-dry devices and hang one load of laundry per week to dry rather than running the dryer. Likewise, you can hang them outside weather permitting.
Green: Use eco friendly cleaning products or make your own. Many effective cleaners (vinegar, lemon) can already be found in your home and are much less harsh (but still effective) at removing stains and odors.
Greener: Find a line of environmentally-conscious cleaning products, and give yourself an extra star if the products are made locally.
