One of New York's biggest attractions is getting a green makeover. The Broadway district, also known as "Great White Way" for its bright lights and billboards, will have a reduced carbon footprint next year, thanks to compact fluorescent bulbs, which will replace some 10,000 traditional exterior and interior bulbs.
That isn't all that will be done to increase the earth-consciousness of the musical productions. Costumes will be washed in cold water from now on and the elaborate sets that are no longer needed will be disposed of using eco-friendly methods.
Michael Bloomberg, mayor of the city announced, "By this time next year, the lights on Broadway will burn just as bright, but the energy bills and our city's carbon output will be lower."
