Things you should always see in a green garage: Used oil containers

Posted by Pinky Bean on November 13, 2008 7:20 AM Filed Under: Home

No, we don't mean containers full of used oil, we mean the proper empty containers you can use for disposing of your used oil in an earth-conscious way. The criteria for used oil containers varies, however this typical standard is a leak-proof container that carries five gallons or less of liquid.

These containers play an important role in preventing oil leaks and spills that can contaminate millions of gallons of water. Because oil does not degrade easily and is so toxic, it also spells bad news for the environment should a spill occur.

Most communities have drop-off locations (some even have pick-ups!) for you to take your used oil once you have a full container. Find out where yours is so you're less likely to put off the task or be tempted to dump your oil somewhere unsafe.
