Using those handy Swiffer pads to get rid of dust and dirt on your floor may seem more green than hauling out your energy-sucking vacuum every time, however when you consider the disposable nature of the pads, they don't exactly seem like a friend to the environment. Why contribute to more junk heading to landfills when you can easily make your own homemade (reusable!) pad? Though some suggestions involve using paper towels because they're less expensive, that doesn't curb the problem of tossing something disposable in the trash numerous times. Instead, check out some of these longer-term suggestions below. Simply spray with some eco-friendly all-pupose cleaner so dust and lint sticks, then toss in the laundry when you're finished.
Old socks - You know all those random pairs of socks collecting at the bottom of your drawer that have huge gaping holes and are no longer comfortable to wear? Put them to goo use and put them over your Swiffer for a fast, easily washable pad.
Old washcloths - The cloths in your linen closet that you would rather die than let your guests use are a great option for sweeping the floor for dust.
Old clothing - Do you see a pattern here? The t-shirt unfit for donating because of permanent stains will find new use if you cut them up and attach them to your swiffer. Just make sure the material is soft enough that you won't scratch your floor.
Microfiber Cloth - If you don't have old clothing, socks or cloths kicking around the house, invest in one or two microfiber cloths that can be washed and reused.
Knit - If you love to knit as a hobby, consider your new floor sweeper your next project.
