For a lot of people mustard is just another everyday condiment found at your last bar-b-que or sometimes an annoying stain on a shirt. Often times it is considered only second best after ketchup. Not for me, if I had to choose a condiment to take on a desert island, mustard would be the easy choice, which kind of mustard would a bit tougher decision. After a little research, I’ve found out that my love of mustard is quite a healthy addiction.
Starting at the top, mustard seeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, (reduces blood pressure) iron, calcium, zinc, protein and dietary fiber. And as far as benefits, add to the list reduction of asthma severity, migraine frequency, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer prevention. Wow, how’s that for a powerhouse spice.
So, now we know it’s good for you, besides hot dogs what do you do with it? Mustard is a very versatile spice grown in many varieties and sold as whole seeds, powdered dry mustard and prepared. You’ll notice it in many recipes but try adding it to some of your old favorites as well for extra flavor. Here is a rough guide to a tasty mustard vinaigrette:
1. Oil to vinegar ratio is 3 to 1.
2. Add a touch of mustard, pepper and salt to vinegar.
3. Whisk ingredients while adding the oil.
Besides cooking here are a few other reasons to keep some mustard in the spice cabinet according to ehow.com:
1. Relieve stuffy head by rubbing a thin layer of mustard over chest and then placing a hot towel on top (probably need a shower after this one)
2. Deodorize a smelly bottle by adding a touch of mustard and warm water then shake and rinse.
3. De-skunk your car after collision by adding 3 cups of dry mustard to 3 gallons of warm water then splash over tires and other affected areas.
In the past I’ve always used my mustard in typical fashion like on my sandwiches and as a vinaigrette additive but now that I know the extra health benefits I’ll be sure to keep it in mind. Enjoy.
