About two months before a new season starts something interesting starts to happen. If you happen to visit your local mall, you'll notice some rather conspicuous looking clothing. Despite the fact that you may still be sweating in hot summer heat, there are racks of long-sleeved shirts and jackets in warm, muted colors. It kind of looks like *gulp*... fall clothing. While nobody is ready to start thinking of wearing real shoes and pants in the middle of summer, the new clothing lines at least give you a glimpse into upcoming trends.
It's tempting to stock up on one of everything for the new season, however you may be able to do your wallet and the earth a favor by getting more mileage from key pieces in your wardrobe by extending them for a season. Rather than buying an entire new outfit, one or two smaller changes can transform the clothing you already own and carry you into the current season while still looking stylish and up-to-date. This fall is all about making a statement and going bold. Without further adieu, here are some of fall's key trends and how to fit them in with what you already own.
Colored and patterned tights
Tights can be one of the most cost-efficient way to change your outfit. You can thank the hit show Gossip Girl for this trend, as last season, characters made these tights a wardrobe staple in colder months.
Pair with: You favorite little black dress from the summer for an instant fall update.
Knee-high boots
An initial investment for sure, but these are one of those classic pieces that really never goes out of style. Make sure above all else that they fit well, are comfortable and are well-made and are a color you'll get good use from (black or brown is always a good choice). Buy the right ones and they'll be something you will use for many years to come.
Pair with: A floral or solid summer skirt and darker top.
Plaid
Your plaid preference will dictate what you should buy and how much you spend on this bold pattern. While a plaid skirt in a nice modern shape or a wool peacoat will remain a classic for years, a jacket in a trendier cut or a dress may date itself more quickly.
Pair with: A plaid jacket with a fitted waist is perfect with a black skirt you already own or capri pants in a neutral color. Or if you're feeling bold, a pair of tights in a plaid pattern will go nicely with the little black dress mentioned earlier. If you're still in tank top mode, make the look fall-friendly with a soft, plaid scarf.
Denim
Unlike the past few seasons where one style of denim seems to rule, this season embraces a variety of styles. Hang on to your skinny jeans from last year or pick up a pair of classic wide-leg trouser jeans for a dressier look.
Pair with: The ombre shirt, ruffled blouse or lingerie-inspired top from your summer wardrobe and a blazer.
Purple
The grape-colored huge is back in a huge way for fall. The best part is the versatility of the color. You can wear it in a main piece such as your shirt or accessorize with a great bag, scarf or tights.
Pair with: Your lighter denim skirts or jeans
