Okay, I'll concede that my title maybe goes a bit overboard, but I have to hype how great carpet sweepers are.
Invented in Michigan in 1876, the carpet sweeper was a common sight in Western homes for about a century and then in the 1980's vacuum cleaners became so affordable that carpet sweepers just fell out of fashion.
A carpet sweeper isn't going to replace your vacuum cleaner, but it's perfect for those in-between cleanings when you just need to pick-up the light dirt on top of your carpet. And modern carpet sweepers aren't like the ones your mother used. They're lightweight and feature advanced brush systems that can get into corners. You just sweep and empty the container. Nothin' to it.
So why are there things eco-friendly? That's the best part. You may switch to CFL's and use the 'eco' setting on your dishwasher but everytime you vacuum your living room that big powerful motor is sucking-up electricity. And that the great thing about carpet sweepers: no batteries, no cord, it's all elbow grease. You get a clean living room and you keep your electricity usage to a minimum. Plus, a good model like the Bissel pictured here is only about $25. Cheap!
That's it, I've run out of reasons to get one. If you have carpet you should definitely have a carpet sweeper in your eco-friendly cleaning closet.
