A "Tiffin", for those unfamiliar with the word, is an Indian English term for an in-between-meals snack or a light lunch. Tiffin carriers or dabbas are the stackable stainless steel carriers used to carry these light lunches.
A tiffin carrier will have 2 or 3 more compartments in which to store vegetables, rice, curry or bread. Latches prevent the whole works from falling apart in the cafeteria or on the job site.
And just because these sturdy lunch boxes were designed with Indian cuisine in mind there is no reason why you couldn't fill you tiffin box with salad, pasta and garlic toast... or Thai food for that matter.
The only downfall to these container is that obviously you can't microwave them since they're made of steel. But steel is also the greatest strength of the tiffin box as they usually have a very, very long lifespan.
If you're looking to reduce your exposure to plastics, or if you just want a really cool lunch box that'll last, poke around some kitchen shops in your neighborhood or hit the jump to check them out online. Happy shopping!
