Get Out And Play: Hacky Sack

Posted by Cee Bee on August 13, 2008 9:00 AM Filed Under: Recreation

Alright, you’ve probably been walking around downtown or at the park and seen a group of people standing around with a small object bouncing up and down between each person and wondered what was going on. These people aren’t just a bunch of derelicts killing time or scheming up some mischief, they’re just like you and I except they’re also enjoying the fun and camaraderie of playing hacky sack or footbag.

Hacky Sack has to be the minimalist’s ultimate sport or game. You’ve got yourself and possibly a few friends plus an ten dollar piece of cloth or leather filled with seeds or beads, coming together providing thousands of hours of entertainment. Probably the only way to make this game anymore eco-friendly would be to strip down to a loin cloth and play in bare feet.

This game can literally be played anytime and anywhere. You could be waiting for a bus or dinner to cook, you could be playing in a soccer field or even in an elevator, you could be on coffee break or camping. There is no limits on time or space needed to play and you can carry the hacky sack around in your pocket. You can play by yourself but this is also a great social game since your usually standing around in close proximity anyways.

Hacky sack can be a great form of exercise and great for balance, agility and eye hand coordination. I’ve even heard of hacky sack being used as a rehab activity to strengthen leg muscles following knee injuries.

There are few rules associated with hacky sack and I think that’s probably what makes it so much fun. The golden rule when playing hacky sack is to never touch it with your hands. Most of the contact will be with your feet but often players will use their knees or other body parts to create new and interesting variations or tricks. Another rule or courtesy would be to share or pass the hacky sack as often as possible when playing in a group. Keep in mind that hacky sack groups always include different levels of players so don’t feel shy in approaching the next hack session you see in your local park.

Check out the video posted below, this is an example of the limitless possibilities of hacky sack and also how it can become an art form a this level.

Great article and you don't have to pay 600$ for a membership at a gym where the people running the place are rude and not the picture of health.
