Fashion & Earth set to offer affordable eco-friendly fashions

Thanks to Adrian Desbarats for this story!

Looking good and staying green can be a tough mission to accomplish, but it's one that shouldn't mean you have to compromise on your style or your budget. That's the concept behind Fashion & Earth, a new eco-friendly online clothing store scheduled to launch next month. The founders of the company hope they will be able to make environmentally-conscious fashion accessible and affordable for anyone who has ever watned to buy organic clothing, but found in unsuitable or too pricey.

“Finding green clothing that’s stylish, affordable and lasts well can be a challenge,” says Adrian Desbarats, president of Fashion & Earth. “Even though many people want to make clothing choices that are healthier for themselves and also better for the planet, they don’t always know where to turn. We aim to make it easier for everybody to access high-quality eco-friendly fashions that look and feel great to offer a truly sustainable solution to the environmental problems of the traditional garment industry.”

Not only will the clothing and accessories focus on reducing environmental impact, the company will also donate 5% of their profits to organizations that help the earth.

So just what will you find at Fashion & Earth? For now just women's clothing, such as fashion tops and sweaters ranging in price from $30 to $120, pants and jeans for $60 to $100, as well as a variety of dresses, skirts, jackets, shoes and accessories. Green clothing lines for men and children are expected to become available in 2009. All items will come from a variety of socially and environmentally responsible brands. In fact, in order to be sold through Fashiion & Earth, all brands must use organic fabrics such as bamboo, soy, hemp and organic cotton, and they must also utilize environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes and fair trade practices. One of the other major considerations for items sold through the company is what Desbarats calls the "everyday person" test.

“We aim to carry green clothing items that the everyday person loves to wear and can afford to buy,” he says. “The quality and fit of the organic clothing we offer means these garments will quickly become wardrobe favorites that can hold up over time.”

To contribute to the affordability of the clothing, the company will provide free shipping on all orders including return items, and are also offering a 20% discount to the first customers who sign up on the website for the company newsletter and shop when the store officially launches in September. Sign up and learn more about the company on their official website after the jump!

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Palm oil is in so many products it's hard to keep track: everything from face cream to pasta sauce. The problem is everytime you buy a product containing palm oil you are directly supporting the destruction of habitats for endangered species such as Sumatran tigers and orangutans. Always look for products that contain sustainable oils such as canola, sunflower or olive oil instead.
