Ever wonder what it would feel like to wear a plastic Coke bottle? Now you don't have to speculate because Coca-Cola has partnered up with Wal-Mart to sell t-shirts partially made from "recycled assorted soda bottles."
Apparently it's not quite as weird as it sounds; the shirts are actually made of 52 per cent cotton and 48 per cent polyester. It is the polyester that contains the recycled bottles, however the shirts may not feel exactly as you would expect. They are described as feeling somewhat softer than a standard men's t-shirt made from conventional materials and with a $7.50 price tag if you order online ($5 if you pick one up in one of the 500 stores nationwide that carry them) it's hard to argue. A Wal-Mart representative realizes the shirt may not change the world, but believes the company is still on the right path.
“It has to start somewhere,” the 25-year company veteran said about sustainability and other environmentally friendly practices. “The company is huge, huge on this.”
For those wondering if a material made from recycled plastic would be comfortable and breathe well, however eco-friendly companies such as Patagonia who specialize in outdoor gear, have actually been using similar materials in the production of their own clothing lines.
