Starting next year California residents will be able to judge their family, friends and neighbors according to how their car ranks on a green scale. Well maybe that's not exactly how it breaks down, however all vehicles sold in the state will soon be subject to a mandatory green performance label.
The rating stickers are currently used, but on a voluntary basis. As of January 1, 2009, car manufacturers will be required to attach eco-labels to any 2009 model year vehicles. The labels will rate the environmental impact of vehicles based on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the most green a car can be. A representative for the California Air Resources Board says that the information will assist consumers in making an informed decision about future vehicle purchases and take factors like reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving gas into account when buying.
