If you're tuning into the debut of Planet Green this week - it officially launches on June 4 - don't expect to be treated to a sermon on the benefits of living a green life. Eileen O'Neill, president of the new network which replaces Discovery Home, says the "eco-tainment" on the channel will instead appeal to the masses by entertaining them.
"The network is not only not finger-wagging, it's sexy, it's interesting, it's irreverent," O'Neill said.
The goal of "eco-tainment" will largely be supported by Hollywood's greenest who have signed up to participate. Motley Crue drummer (and Pamela Anderson's ex) Tommy Lee will face-off against rapper Ludacris on "Battleground Earth," which will pit the two against each other in a competition to see which star shines a brighter shade of green. Adrian Grenier shows off his "Alter-Eco" where celebrities and average Joes alike receive green pointers from Grenier and his team. Leonardo DiCaprio declines to take up camera time but is still the driving force behind "Greensburg," a look at the Kansas town that is rebuilding with eco-friendliness in mind after a tornado ravaged the area last year. Maria Menounos will show what the latest green initiatives among celebrities are on "Hollywood Green with Maria Menounos," and Bill Nye (formerly the Science Guy) will host "Stuff Happens," a show dedicated to showing the before-and-after consumption process of everyday items.
Discovery also used the launch of the new channel to go green themselves, installing 400-gallon rainwater-collection reservoirs, motion detector lights and water-conserving toilets in the washrooms, incentives for employees who bike to work and a solar-powered website.
Planet Green officially debuts this Wednesday at 6 p.m. EDT.
