DIY Projects: Make a basketball hoop from recycled bicycle parts

Posted by Pinky Bean on June 15, 2008 5:22 PM Filed Under: Recreation

This project is so easy to do, it only requires three steps to complete. You also have the opportunity to use some parts from an old bicycle that you aren't using anymore. There's no better way to keep kids (and yourself!) active and outdoors during the summer than by providing convenient, fun activities, not to mention the valuable lesson about recycling you can teach with this project.

Intro: Basketball hoop from bicycle parts
Fairly easy way to recycle an old bicycle.

Step 1: Detach parts from Bicycle
Simply detach all cables and loosen all bolts to separate the necessary parts. Adjust the handlebar for proper angle. Attach it to a large piece of wood with U-bolts and voilà!

1. Rotate the handlebar so the hoop is horizontal after removing the fork from the frame
2. then position the rim

Step 2: Clamp it
Now all you need to do is clamp it in place with hose clamps. I did not have clamps when I made it so I used the actual spokes. (see main photo)

I actually think this is a pretty nifty idea. It just needs some extra instruction to add a net an backboard.
