When Kristen Davis arrived at the Hollywood screening of the Sex and the City film a couple of weeks ago, she announced her green presence in the BMW Hydrogen 7, a vehicle that has yet to hit the market and is currently loaned out to the rich-and-famous for short periods of time. The Hydrogen 7 may be a major status symbol, but it's not the only hydrogen-powered vehicle receiving hype among celebrities.
America Ferrera (aka "Ugly Betty"), Magic Johnson and Disney head honcho Bob Iger have all been targeted by Chevrolet to take the Equinox Fuel Cell out for a spin. The Incredible Hulk himself, Edward Norton previously drove the Hydrogen 7, as did Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Honda's FCX Clarity is also rumored to have some high-profile drivers lined up, however the company won't reveal who they might be until later this month. Oscar-winning screenwriter Paul Haggis has already expressed interest in one, going so far as to have his agent try to find him one of the vehicles, which aren't yet available to the public, though 50,000 people have already signed up online to lease one.
Celebrities claim they just want to bring attention to the new green technology taking over the auto market, however there is no denying the buzz created when they roll up to a film premier, fashion show or club in the latest and greatest the industry has to offer. Leonardo DiCaprio is almost synonymous with the Hybrid brand since he showed up to the 2004 Oscar's in one and an environmentally-friendly car may just get as much attention as the designer outfit worn by the driver on the red carpet.
Tell us what you think: is this a passing Hollywood trend or will the celebrity obsession with green cars be a long-term one? Would a celebrity driver or endorsement influence your decision of which car to buy?
