When camping you'll always want to have a source of light with you. Have you ever tried to maneover a campsite at 2 a.m. for a bathroom break while it's pitch-black outside? Enough said.
Instead of a traditional flashlight use an LED flashlight instead for energy efficiency. The Brunton LED Lamplight from Mountain Equipment Co-op is a fairly robust flashlight that turns into a hanging lanter when you need a hands-free source of light. If you want to be really green, use an LED crank flashlight. One minute of cranking provides thirty minutes of light. The downside is that you have to work for your light (come on, it's only one minute!), but the upside is that since the flashlight is battery-free you won't have to worry about dead batteries and thus being caught without any light source at all. This also makes the crank flashlight a must-have at home, kept in an easily accessible drawer in case of a blackout or emergency.
