What a difference a day makes. Just yesterday we were hearing that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was warning scientists and political leaders that global warming would cause the mass migration of up to one billion people. Today scientists are saying global warming will halt until about 2015. Apparently they've been researching changes in sea temperatures in the long-term and have concluded "natural variations" in the climate will balance out the effects of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
This new information which appears in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature, claims that the prediction from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the average global temperature would increase 0.3 degrees Celsius may actually not occur - or at least not yet. The scientists say that after 2015, we could be facing the same issues caused by fossil fuel emissions and experience warming trends once again. Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:
Noel Keenlyside of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences, Kiel, Germany, said: "The IPCC would predict a 0.3°C warming over the next decade. Our prediction is that there will be no warming until 2015 but it will pick up after that."
Writing in Nature, the scientists said: "Our results suggest that global surface temperature may not increase over the next decade, as natural climate variations in the North Atlantic and tropical Pacific temporarily offset the projected anthropogenic [manmade] warming."
Keenlyside adds that we shouldn't get too excited about these results since they are based on an intial computer model of ocean behavior over the course of decades, and are subject to change.
Don't worry Noel, it's hard to imagine anyone will be too overjoyed at the news. Considering contradictory reports and findings on climate change seemingly appear every day - or every week at the least - it's probably safe to say people don't really know what to believe anymore. Hopefully the earth-preserving values and ideas that have been adopted by millions of people worldwide will continue, no matter what scientists say next. Global warming or no global warming, caring for the earth is something that should be done even if we aren't under the gun any longer.
