Last week it was reported that the giant pandas from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding had miraculously survived the massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Sichuan last week. At the time, no news had yet been reported about the status of the giant pandas at Wolong National Park. However news has since surfaced that two of those pandas are still missing and likely did not survive.
The reserve was badly damaged as a result of the quake, with 14 of the enclosures completely destroyed and not fit for use. The pandas have since been moved to a safer area. Five staff members from the reserve were killed as the park is only 30 kilometers from the epicenter of the quake.
