It was recently revealed that humans don't have to stand by and watch as the global bee population disappears. Something as simple as supporting the industry and buying bee-related products can offer encouragement for beekeepers to continue with their trade, as well as act as an incentive for all those would-be beekeepers to take up a new hobby or career.
If you're used to buying scented candles from your favorite home decor shop, next time consider purchasing some beeswax candles for your home instead. Beeswax is produced by young worker bees when they're just 12 to 17 days old. Talk about putting'em to work right away, bee parents are tough! Beekeepers will extract the wax when they extract honey from a hive.
The candles are preferred by some for their high melting point which causes them to melt much more slowly than paraffin-based candles. The burning of beeswax candles is also relatively clean, as they do not produce benzene, acrolyn, lead stearic acid or other toxic chemicals. The candles typically have a 'warmer" yellow glow than their paraffin brothers and do not create as much smoke either.
These candles are another product you can look for at your local farmer's market, as many beekeepers will use the wax from their hives to produce the candles. If you don't locate any at your market (or don't live near a market), you can check out the following candle makers online for more information about how to purchase them.
