The Fairmont Empress in Victoria, British Columbia captures the city's old-fashioned charm and elegance with perfection. Even better, they've taken measures to try to add some green beyond the ivy that adorns the outer walls of the hotel.
What makes it green: The hotel is a supporter of non-profit organizations and environmental education programs. They conserve water and participate in an energy conservation program. The hotel restaurants offer organic food and compost the food that isn't eaten rather than throwing it away. Victoria is very much a walking city and the central location on the Inner Harbor means you won't need to use a car unless visiting areas on the island that are not within walking distance.
Additional amenities: The hotel's afternoon tea is legendary, as is the onsite spa. Three additional dining rooms and restaurants are also located in the hotel. Whale-watching excursions and scenic garden tours are offered within walking distance from the facility. The Fairmont Gold floor offers a private lounge with an extravagant continental breakfast, honor bar and evening hors d'oeuvres. Guest rooms also come equipped with a Sony PlayStation if you decide to attend afternoon tea without the kids.
Green rating: 3 out of 5 branches
