Pierre the penguin escapes problem of male-pattern baldness

Posted by Pinky Bean on April 25, 2008 3:47 PM Filed Under: Animals

All Pierre wanted to do was age gracefully, however the African penguin began to show signs of his 25 years with an unfortunate bald spot on his rear that left him so cold, he refused to swim with his other penguin buddies. Instead, he would sit on the edge of the penguin tank and shiver miserably as the other penguins frolicked in their pond.

Thankfully some biologists from the California Academy of Sciences had Pierre's back (in the figurative and literal sense of the term) and created a special wetsuit for the little guy. Now after six weeks in his new duds, Pierre has regained some of his youth and is growing back his waterproof feathers. Initially scientists worried that all of the other penguins would laugh and call him names and never let poor Pierre join in any penguin games. However, they proved to be a more accepting species and welcomed him into their circle with open wings.

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Did you know that many of the colourful tropical birds at your local pet shop are the product of trapping and animal trafficking? Yikes! Who would want to support that? Instead of caging beautiful tropical birds, why not grab a pair of binoculars and enjoy birds in their natural habitat?
