On Sunday, April 13, the National Geographic Channel will air a television special titled Human Footprint, hosted by Elizabeth Vargas. It's probably not rocket science to figure out what the special is going to be about. The goal of the show is to demonstrate how much the average American consumes and discards during their lifetime. The program will quantify numbers by providing visual examples of the waste generated. For instance a typical toddler will consume 420 pints of milk by the time they reach age two-and-a-half. Can you easily visualize how many milk cartons that is? The show intends to show you exactly what that looks like.
You may also be surprised to learn some of the other figures attached to the things you frequently consume in your daily life. That innocuous burger you're planning to have for dinner tonight will amount to 12,129 hamburgers stretched over your lifetime. The average American will also go through 5,054 newspapers, 12,888 oranges, 3,796 diapers and 31,350 gallons of gas during their time here on earth. Not only will those numbers be quantified, but a bigger picture of human consumption will also be provided, such as the amount of oil used to transport these goods from their original source into your hands.
Tune in at 9 p.m. ET/PT this Sunday (or for repeat broadcasts on April 16 and 22) for a broad look at everything you eat, drink and use - as the show puts it, your entire life' consumption - in one place at one time.
