Daily eco tips from Urban Branches

Posted by Pinky Bean on April 18, 2008 3:51 AM Filed Under: Life

These week, Ecollo is loving Urban Branches, a blog written by a young woman from Brooklyn who incorporates green elements into every part of her life, including her upcoming wedding.

Lindsay has some great product finds, as well as daily eco suggestions, many of which ought to be common sense for most of us, but often require little hints and reminders.

Some of her recent suggestions include:

- Stop buying single use items such as bottled water, one lunch size bags of crisps or candy. Invest in reusable containers and fill them at home from larger packs/bottles/faucet! You'll save some green while at it.

- If you're going to use ziplock bags at all, please reuse them! I bring a zip lock of crackers to work and I reuse the bag, I rinse and dry the bags in the dish dyer. Easy Peasy.(The reason I bring the baggie in the first place is I am already bringing 2 other tupperwares each day, my bag gets so stuffed with square shaped boxes, something had to give!)

- Have a "clean out the fridge" or "rummage" night where you scour the cabinets and fridge to create a meal. Saves you money and helps reduce waste!

- Bring a set of silverwear to the office so you don't resort to plastic ones. Better yet, bring your own cloth napkin from home to wrap them in to transport. I am planning on making this switch myself!

- Here's a easy one: BUY VINTAGE! My favorite boots are "gently worn" when I get my hands on them, some of my favorite dresses are 70's pieces I've breathed new life into!

- Have old T-Shirts at home that you don't wear? And ex-boyfriends favorite vintage tee? Use it to clean instead of rags! (plus get some satisfaction using that favorite tee of his to clean the toilet!)

- Instead of plastic storage containers use glass ones, much better for your health as chemicals don't leech from glass as they do with plastic. I save all my jars (jam, salsa, etc.) and use them instead of tupperware. Since a huge percentage of the price of food is the packaging you're lowering your overall cost by reusing those glass jars!

Hit the jump to check out Urban Branches for more wonderful ideas. In the meantime, in reference to Lindsay's idea to make a meal by cleaning out the fridge, enjoy the Friends clip below where Joey has to eat the contents of his fridge before it all spoils (about 1:15 into the clip).

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day The average baby will go through one ton of diapers before they're toilet trained? That's 5,000 diapers! One option is to use disposable diapers made from recycled materials. Some brands are completely biodegradable and can even be dumped into your composter!
