Coffee drinkers beware, your habit may be destroying the earth

Posted by Pinky Bean on April 24, 2008 10:47 AM Filed Under: Energy, Video

Alright, I'm admittedly one to talk. The Ecollo team members will tell you I often walk into the office carrying a paper cup from my local coffee shop of choice. There's no particularly good reason why; I own reusable mugs (several of them in fact), yet always have some good reason for not carrying one with me. "Uhhh, I forgot it at home" or "Gee, well my bag was really full today and I couldn't possibly fit anything else into it."

Bottom line: there really isn't any excuse for the waste from paper cups to continue and end up in landfills, as the girl in the video below muses. There are so many good reasons to switch to a personal stainless steel mug. 1) It will keep your coffee hotter far longer than that dinky paper cup, which lets face it, offers up lukewarm coffee at best by the time you actually make it into the office. 2)  Stainless steel is truly the best reusable option, as we now know that hot liquids in polycarbonate plastic cups or containers leeches harmful toxins into our lattes and 3) Many coffee places are encouraging the eco-friendliness of reusing travel mugs and offer a discount if you bring in your own cup (plus you're saving them a few cents too!).

Watch the video below and in the meantime, I'll hang my head in shame and vow to make my addiction a little greener at the very least by carrying my reusable mug with me from now on.

It's not just serving ware waste that should be considered, either. The roasting process itself is a source of emissions to the atmosphere and consumes copious amounts of energy when done in the traditional way, i.e., the way that 99%+ of roasters do it. New technology is available to eliminate emissions and reduce power consumption. At this risk of sounding like a commercial, my company, Muddy Dog Roasting Company, has installed the new, cleaner roasting technology, and other leaders in the field are contemplating the investment. Ask you roaster if they have "Gone Green".
