Toys produced in China are once again the focus of a mass recall, this time due to the threat of possible internal damage.
MagnaMan Magnetic action figures distributed by Mega Brands Inc. contain small magnets that may fall out of the toys and then be swallowed or inhaled by children. Multiple magnets in the body can cause fatal damage such as intestinal perforation, infection or blockage if the magents stick together. In the wake of several incidents, including one where a young boy had a magnet stuck in his nasal cavity, 1.1 million Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. preschool toys are being recalled by Mega Brands. The company is also recalling 1.3 million of the MagnaMan figures after 25 reported incidents of magnets coming loose and falling out.
This isn't Mega Brands first time initiating a huge recall; in 2006 the company reported one death and four serious injuries of children who swalled magnets that had come loose from their Magnetis magnetic building sets and promptly recalled 3.8 million of those toys. Then in 2007, the company added another 4 million Mega Brands magnetic toys.
Lead paint, date rape drugs and now death by magnets. China sure is building up a solid reputation for fine craftsmanship of quality toys. You might be better off giving your child an electrical drill to play with at this rate. All the more reason to contact a supplier of green toys you can provide to your youngest family members. Hopefully ones that are magnet and lead-free at the very least.
