The annual appearance of cherry blossoms in Japan is enough to warrant a major celebration. In fact, when the blossoms are first spotted, it is considered a sure sign of spring and friends and family cram into local parks to admire the flowers, while the beer and sake flow freely.
This past weekend was a joyous one for country residents, as the flowers blossomed earlier than usual thanks to a period of warm weather, according to the Meteorlogical Agency. The annual occurence is one that receives significant media attention, as the "cherry front" sweeps the country from the south to north.
It sounds like they really know how to welcome spring with style in Japan. In fact let's take a cue from the revelers and make spotting the first leaves on barren trees or a patch of green grass a valid reason for North Americans to pour out offices and meet in public places to consume copious amounts of alcohol. All in the name of celebrating the season, of course. Who would say no to that?
