Lamborghini has unveiled their version of an eco-friendly vehicle. The new Gallardo LP560-4 is 44 pounds less than its predecessor and its carbon emissions have been reduced by 18 per cent. The car that causes grown men to weep will now provide 17 miles per gallon, as opposed to the 14 of the last model. Just for the record, 17 miles per gallon is typical for a truck and some SUVs.
Lamborghini hopes to eventually reduce the carbon emissions of their vehicles by 40 per cent, however for every kilmeter driven, this new model still releases 325 grams of carbon dioxide. Stephan Winkelmann, the Lamborghini CEO weighed in, saying that though the emissions are high compared to a standard car (which releases approximately 150-200 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer), drivers of this type of vehicle generally aren't willing to compromise on the speed factor.
"Being a supersports car is all about accelerating and top speed. If you want to go fast you consume, and if you consume, you have emissions," Winkelmann said. "You will never come to the average emissions of average car."
Winkelmann also counters that a Lamborghini is also driven significantly less than a regular car, with most traveling an average of 3,100 miles per year.
What Winkelmann failed to address is if drivers are counteracting the effects of driving a Lamborghini by walking or biking - as opposed to the more likely scenario of hopping into a gas-guzzling SUV - for the remainder of their road transportation needs.
