In a couple of years, that beemer driving down the road next to you could be battery-powered. The folks at BMW are currently mulling over the idea of producing the company's first entirely electric car in an effort to keep up with other luxury auto manufacturers who are developing greener vehicles.
The BMW version of the electric car would produce zero emissions, something insiders in the company say is a definite possibility according to recent tests, however CEO Norbert Reithofer says a final decision won't be made until later this year. Reithofer has been a vocal critic of the emissions targets released by the EU, but has acknowledged BMW has set up Project i, a company initiative that is working on new vehicle concepts for the future.
BMW will release its first hybrid vehicle in 2009 and is working with GM and Mercedes to come up with options to compete with hybrids produced Toyota
