It seems Nokia is paying attention to all of the information concerning the significant environmental waste caused by discarded cell phones. Yesterday Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of the mobile developer, unofficially unveiled the new Nokia Remade, a phone made from recycled materials.
The phone is currently in the beginning stages of development (Kallasvuo admitted he couldn't yet make a call from the one he was showing), however it is an indicator of what is to come from the company - and what could inspire other manufacturers to pursue options for greener phones. The keypad and the metal casing of the Remade are constructed from recycled cans and some of the electrical components utilize recycled materials.
As the Remade is currently only in the concept stage, there is no set release date or definite plan to produce the phone. However considering the estimated three billion cell-phone users worldwide, many of whom replacel their mobile devices every year - it is encouraging to see cellular manufacturers join the green business venture and start exploring ways to lessen the environmental impact of their products.
