The weekend you've been waiting for is finally here: Super Bowl Weekend. Whether your rooting for the New England Patriots, those other guys (let's face it, do they even really matter?), or neither, it's always worth tuning into just for the commercials. Though we've already conceded just how unfriendly all of the private jets flying in for the Super Bowl is to the environment, there's no reason you can't find green ways to enjoy the game.
Organic Food and Drink
Football and beer go hand-in-hand like milk and Oreos: you just can't have one without the other. Thankfully you can find an organic option of everything these days, including beer. And good beer at that. Butte Creek Brewing based in California have some fantastic options for even the biggest of beer snobs. Choose between a Porter, India Pale Ale, Pale Ale and Pilsner, or even better don't choose and sample all of the varieties. Please remember to be responsible and ensure you have someone to carry or drive you home.
Of course you'll have an excuse to down the beer with another game staple: the potato chip. The Kettle brand have organic options in flavors such as sea salt and black pepper, lightly salted and chipotle chili barbecue. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, use the Kettle tortilla chips - made with organic yellow corn - to make nachos.
Just to make sure you've got your bases covered (you can boo me, I used a baseball reference in a football article), don't forget your veggies. Pick up some locally grown produce such as carrots, snap peas, radishes, broccoli and peppers and make up a vegetable tray.
Smply Organic, found Whole Foods Market, offers a whole range of dips in flavors such as ranch, french onion, spicy black bean and creamy dill as the perfect accompaniment for chips, vegetables or whatever else you decide to serve.
Have a party
Yes, watching the Super Bowl on your 42-inch plasma television uses a considerable amount of energy, however I know better than to tell a sports fanatic to shut off the tube during the all-important game. Instead of watching by yourself, have some friends over so at the very least you're only expending the energy of one televsion as opposed to several. Watching football with a group of buddies is a lot more fun that watching by yourself anyway. Throwing together an informal get-together doesn't need to be tedious. After all, I just provided some snack options for you. Just make sure you don't negate the benefits of turning on only one television by using paper plates and plastic cups and utensils. Use glass/cermanic/insert-material-of-choice-here plates and glasses and serve finger foods.
Recycle
Take your empties to your local depot for a refund. If you and your guests drink the customary amount for such a big football event, you may almost recover the entire cost of the party in refunds from your bottles and cans.
