Wine can certainly help create a romantic ambience on Valentine's Day and impressing your date by demonstrating a refined wine-serving technique will only contribute to this. Just a head's up, putting the bottle between your knees to wrestle out the cork is not advised if you want the date to continue.
In the video below you'll see a tutorial teaching you how to properly serve white wine (who knew it was such an art?). These are pretty easy tips to follow, but ones I wasn't aware of prior to watching this. I was pretty excited to see Jacob use The Waiter's Friend, which I own and swear by (it's foolproof). Technically, the popping noise Jacob makes when the cork is pulled from the bottle is considered a faux pas by sommeliers, but then again they also go to school to specifically learn how to avoid making such a sound.
If you aren't sure which wine to serve, try one of Heller Estate's certified organic options.
2006 Chenin Blanc
Super-ripe honeydew melon and bright concentrated grapefruit with nice floral throughout. All sorts of citrus notes along with hints of juicy guava and subtle peach. Luscious mouthfeel. The perfect combination of bright, lively acid and smooth, long residual sweetness makes the mouth of this Chenin shine. Look for flavors of lychee, citrus, ripe pear and green apple.
2006 Chardonnay
100% Chardonnay ~ Subtle notes of toasted oak and soft vanilla with citrus fruit and mineral character. The combination of fruit and oak give this chardonnay a creamy aroma. Bright mouthfeel with nice fruit and well balanced oak. Flavors that revolve primarily around citrus fruit, green apple and mineral. Smooth mouthfeel and soft finish make this wine perfect for everyday sipping and the perfect accompaniment to seafood and poultry dishes.
Voila! Now you can wow your date with a great wine and your expertise in serving it.
