The debate is still raging about the amount of sun exposure that is safe and healthy for your skin, though the general consensus from health professionals seems to be that any exposure to the sun requires sunscreen (hence the everyday facial moisturizers and foundations that now contain varying levels of SPF).
You always want to be especially careful while you're on vacation. There's nothing worse than being holed up in a hotel or condo applying ice packs to severely sunburned skin. Case in point: When I was 15 and traveled to Mexico, I obediently applied sunscreen to the obvious areas, but didn't pay close attention and missed my knees. Let me tell you, there isn't anything more painful than sunburned knees, as every single time you bend or crouch and the skin stretches and - well I'm sure I don't need to elaborate further. Even though knees are not mentioned in the tutorial below, maybe if I'd have proper instruction, I could have avoided the pitfalls of amateur sunscreen application and the resulting peel-fest that inevitabley occured.
Try UV Natural sunscreen, available at major retailers such as REI and Whole Foods Market. They use natural ingredients that are biodegradable and environmentally-conscious.
