Greenpeace activists are on the move again, though their efforts targeted air travel as opposed to ocean activities this time around. Four protestors made their way onto a Heathrow Airport tarmac earlier today, proceeded to mount the top an an airplane which had just traveled from Manchester to London, and wrapped a large banner proclaiming "Climate emergency. No 3rd runway" around the tailfin of the plane.
Greenpeace is protesting the possible expansion of Heathrow Airport, which would - as the banner indicates - include a third runway. The organization says that approximately 100,000 flights run each year between the airport and locations that could be easily be reached by train (such as the London to Manchester journey). Though the cost of train travel makes it easy to see why people are choosing to fly instead, Greenpeace maintains that significant tax subsidies used to offset the costs of flying and expand airports could instead be used to make alternate transportation, such as the train, more appealing.
Not surprisingly, the protestors were arrested shortly after they placed their banner on the plane. Of course the big question now is not regarding how effective the protest was, but rather how did four people easily walk through airport security and climb atop a plane, only to be arrested after the incident had already occured?
