Yesterday, I provided you with some organic chip and dip options to serve guests at your Super Bowl party. As it turns out, you may want to appoint a trusted family member or friend to guard the dip bowl.
Paul L. Dawson and his class of food microbiologists from Clemson University apparently have far too much time of their hands and conducted a study on the effects of double-dipping. Using wheat crackers and several varieties of dip, the students discovered double-dipping a cracker three to six times tranferred approximately 10,000 bacteria from a mouth to the dip bowl.
Consider this your due warning. We're right in the middle of cold and flu season and passing along those germs is easy enough without transferring them to the food everyone is eating.
"I like to say it's like kissing everybody at the party -- if you're double dipping, you're putting some of your bacteria in that dip," Dawson said
