Green living with KT Tunstall

Posted by Pinky Bean on January 18, 2008 5:59 AM Filed Under: Life

KT Tunstall is not only a musician with two hit albums - Drastic Fantastic (2007) and Eye To The Telescope (2006) - she's also deeply committed to living an eco friendly lifestyle. She loves environmentally-conscious fashion, doesn't own a car, tours in a bus that is run on bio-fuel and even owns a guitar constructed from old whiskey barrels that was custom-made for her by Talisker, a Scottish whiskey maker (and yes, she adores whiskey too).

Therefore it seemed only natural for her to live in an eco friendly home as well. Rather than purchasing a huge new house as many stars who have experienced her kind of success might do, she decided to renovate the London flat she shares with her boyfriend. The makeover used recycled radiators and wood, solvent-free paint, solar panels, spray taps, energy-efficient appliances and wall insulation made from sheep's wool (which reduces the need for air conditioning since it keeps homes cooler).

"I'm not out to preach, but global warming is the most important issue in our lives," she says. "It's not about changing the way you live in a radical way. Even small changes can make a difference."

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Snails and slugs are the mortal enemies of plant-loving gardeners the world over. You don't need chemicals to combat these slimy, plant-munching critters. Try surrounding your precious plants with rough material such as crunched-up eggshells, gravel and sand. Strips of copper can also keep pests away by giving them a mild electric shock. Until snails start wering sneakers, these two ideas should help you protect your plants naturally.
