Is dogmeat still on the menu?

Posted by Leafy Green on January 31, 2008 1:07 AM Filed Under: Animals, Food

I've blogged on this topic before, but it's worth bringing up again and not just for shock value.  Eating dogmeat really is not a very... it's just that... it's just not cool, okay?  For example, here is a photo that was taken recently at the Moran Market near Seoul, Korea.

Yes, those look like plump roasted puppies on the grill. Now that you've seen the picture you can't really "un-see" it can you?  We're all human beings but there are some pretty big cultural divides, especially when it comes to food.

Where do you stand on the issue?

Warning: The jump contains a slideshow of very disturbing images of dogs being mistreated, skinned, gutted and cooked.  You have been warned.

According to the humane society of the United States between 3-4 million dogs or cats are euthanized each year. That's a lot of pets and a lot of meat just in the U.S. I've been to a few parts of the world where spay and neutering aren't exactly top priorities. I'm not sure what the numbers of dog overpopulation would be worldwide but it must be immense. I'm from Canada, and 'the man's best friend' mentality has a firm grip, but if some of the starving people in other countries can find use for that dog meat I don't see any problem with it. However, I've seen dogs eat just about anything, including shit and plastic, do they have organically fed dogs available?

Some good points, cb. A lot of that "pet meat" is reintroduced into the food supply as feed for cattle, pigs and chickens!

Animals are animals, and some are cuter than others. I think the biggest issue, even from the perspective of another culture, is the abuse these animals face before they're turned into food.
