How many times can I write about the potential evils of polycarbonate plastic bottles? I figure I can hold out until a) retailers are banned from selling them until they are proven safe or b) conclusive evidence shows that they do not cause any negative long-term effects such as cancer or developmental issues. Until then, I'll continue to encourage you to use bottles made of alternative materials (ones that aren't known to affect animal reproduction).
We've covered options for water bottles for adults and kids, however your tiniest family members (aside from pets) may still be drinking liquids from harmful bottles. Even worse, whereas an adult may have water and a child may have juice in their plasic containers, babies are likely to have warm milk in theirs. As we learned yesterday, hot liquids are a catalyst for the leaching of Bisphenol A, the unsafe chemical found in these bottles. Even though Bisphenol A tests are ongoing, I can't imagine exposing my child to a chemical that has been shown to cause brain development problems in test animals.
Instead, glass baby bottles are probably the safest option for little ones. These Evenflo Sensitive Response Clear Glass Bottles are designed to prevent air from entering a baby's stomach and use natural silicone nipples. There is a warning that comes with these bottles though, as they can break from sudden temperature changes, so exercise caution when using them. Check for cracks after heating and after usage. However, keep in mind glass bottles used to be the norm and I haven't heard horror stories regarding the use of them. They should be treated with the same care of anything else you allow near your baby.
