Super-cute food expert Maggie Nemser over at Yahoo! Food has some take-out alternatives for those of us watching our waistline. I think Maggie is ultra-obsessed with counting fat grams... but still let's take a peek at her tips before you hit the jump to read her full article.
Mexican: Maggie says to avoid sour cream, chorizo and chips. Apparently sour cream contains three times the fat of vanilla ice cream! She does give thumbs-up to grilled fish, salsa and grilled chicken fajitas (with no tortillas). Our thoughts: What is the point of salsa if you can't scoop it up with chips? Oh- and good luck finding grilled fish at your local Taco Bell. And... isn't a grillen chicken fajita with no tortillas really just grilled chicken? Maggie missed the mark on Mexican.
Italian: Maggie recommends skipping the fried calamari, alfredo sauce and garlic bread in favour of marinara sauce, parmesean cheese and prosciutto or carpaccio. Our thoughts: The girl who just told us to not eat corn chips or tortillas doesn't seems to think that carb-dense pasta is anything to worry about (I guess most plain pasta is fat free) and she didn't bother to recommend any Italian-style seafood dishes which can be loaded with healthy omega-3's.
Sushi: No tempura and no tuna! Too much mercury and mayo. Maggie recommends sashimi, cucumber rolls and miso soup. Our thoughts: Freshly made sushi is without a doubt one of your healthiest take-out options. A hot cup of miso soup and some vegetarian sushi makes a great lunch on a rainy day. Staying away from yellowfin anf bluefin tuna is really the smart thing to do right now until the whole mercury controversy is sorted out.
