Environmental Stupidity Marches On in 2008

Posted by Leafy Green on January 7, 2008 1:57 AM Filed Under: Life, Transportation

You might argue that I've done this rant before, and I have, but it's worth repeating.

So the other day I was channel surfing and noticed that the same 2 or 3 commericals were running on a bunch of stations at the same time.  One was by Chevrolet for a gargantuan SUV and two by Ford, one for a mammoth pickup truck and the other for a titanic SUV that rivalled the Chevrolet mentioned in the previous ad.

A few minutes later the Ford ad came on again.  I grabbed the remote and sure enough there were the same ads running on the other channels.  A few minutes later, same thing!

I'm not going to argue that there isn't a legitimate need for road vehicles that can haul heavy loads or carry lots of people.  I would be willing to bet that less than 0.1% of the North American population has any legitimate requirement for a Ford Super Duty truck.

My question is: if you can't advertise cigarettes to children, how is it that you can advertise these fuel-sucking, 4-wheel-drive ego-boosters to a population of people that is supposed to be reducing its energy consumption and waste?

Go ahead, keep making SUVs.  Keep selling 'em.  But it should be illegal to promote these vehicles outside of automotive publications.  I say let Toyota promote the Prius, Yaris and Corolla however they please-- but restrict the Toyota Land Cruiser to the pages of "Big SUV Monthly".

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Did you know that using a dishwasher can actually be more eco-friendly than washing dishes by hand? Always run a full load and be sure to set your machine to low-temp wash and air dry. If your machine has a 'short cycle' take advantage of that as well. A great excuse to avoid doing the dishes!
