Create-a-cat

Posted by Pinky Bean on January 5, 2008 6:32 PM Filed Under: Animals

You can customize many things: clothing, cars - and now cats?

So maybe the Ashera GD hypoallergenic cat isn't quite the same thing as walking into a tailor and custom-ordering a dress to exact specifications, but these genetically modified kitties indicate that customizing every detail of your household pet down to their eye color may not be that far off.

The original Ashera cats bred the African Serval and the Asian leopard cat with a domestic breed to create the leopard spots and contrasting stripes found on this felines. Genetic monitoring guarantees consistency in the cat's features and to standardize breeding. The Asheras are marketed as true family pets, with claims they are good with both children and other pets and - unlike most household cats who would scratch out your eyes at the mere attempt - don't mind being walked on a leash.

Lifestyle Pets is introducing the hypoallergenic version of the cat, the Ashera GD, this year. Now those with severe allergies are afforded the opportunity to become cat owners. "Afforded" is the operative word here - the GD is priced at $28,000. If you're feeling a little stingy today, have no fear - you can order the regular old Ashera for a mere $22,000. Pocket change really.
