Shelve that decaf and head to Starbucks

Posted by Pinky Bean on December 5, 2007 4:57 AM Filed Under: Health

Hallelujah, the coffee gods are finally on my side. After years of negative press surrounding caffeine and the potentially harmful effects on your health, some experts are finally touting its benefits. They still say the risks associated with too much coffee include raised blood pressure, jitteriness and sleep disruptions. However, some common myths associated with caffeine consumption are now being dispelled.

The good news includes:

- Contrary to initial research, experts cannot provide a link between caffeine and any kind of cancer or a connection to ulcers, cardiac arrhythmias and infertility.

- Problems with hand-eye coordination and attention to detail? Small amounts of caffeine consumption during your day can help you stay more alert and actually improve your performance on tasks that require those skills.

- Moderate caffeine consumption may help lower your risk of type 2 diabetes. In fact, the Journal of the American Medical Association recently reported that those who drink four to six cups of coffee a day have a 28 per cent lower risk of developing this type of diabetes than those who drink less than two cups of day.

- There are more antioxidants in caffeine than in blueberries and broccoli.

See, I drink coffee to save my life. Now if scientists can just find a way to eliminate the persistent shaking and the annoying buzzing in my ears, everything will be just about perfect.

Great article Pinky Bean, but the title is a little disconcerting. Starbucks sells very little fair trade coffee. In fact most stores will only brew a pot if it is requested by a customer. They continue to sell some fair trade beans, but they represent a very small proportion of the product for sale. Also, a fair trade blend has yet to be offered as the coffee of the day. Starbucks avoids increasing the sales of fair trade coffee because the profit margin on fair trade coffee is lower. Since 2000 world coffee prices have plummeted, but Starbucks has not adjusted their prices, instead profiting from the higher margins. Starbucks is not a fair trade company. Starbucks is a union-busting company.

Hmmm... Brady's comments bring some interesting issues to light. I'd like to see some more info on what Starbucks is (or is not) doing in terms of delivering a fair and sustainable product...

Thanks Leafy Green. I don't mean to attack the article. It's just Starbucks is very misleading with their advertising. I know I was deceived for quite a while. Finally I did the research and the results were quite shocking.
