If you're going to travel over the winter or are already planning your spring and summer vacations, be sure to check out the Organic Holidays website. Site creator Linda Moss features over 50 travel destinations that offer organic places to stay during your holiday.
Approximately two-thirds of the accomodations offer at least one meal that is certified organic, whether it be a small restaurant, a kitchen garden, an orchard or a vineyard. The meals served use as much organic produce as possible, which are usually about 50 per cent organic; however the percentage goes up at many places, with some even offering 100 per cent organic fare. In most cases, these places use local produce as opposed to imported, or will grow their own.
The remaining locations are organic farms or smallholdings that are self-catering and provide information regarding the availabilty of organic food, both the farm's own produce, local produce in the area or places that will deliver an organic produce box.
Moving beyond produce, these locations also specialize in homemade products such as jam, baked goods, cheese, win and ice cream.
Linda has written a handy guide called "Organic Places to Stay in the UK." The book features over 500 colour photographs and also includes information regarding public transportation and the allowance of children and pets at the locations referenced. The second edition of the book will be available in February 2008 and can be ordered in advance from the Organic Holidays website or at the Green Books Online Store.
