Benefits of Rooibos tea

Posted by Pinky Bean on December 13, 2007 4:49 AM Filed Under: Food, Health
Thanks to Sapphira Nuttall for this story!

Move over green tea, you’ve got stiff competition. Rooibos tea – or ‘”red bush” in Afrikaans – contains comparable levels of polyphenols to green tea, and demonstrates anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties.

It’s exhausting list of benefits include:

- relief of stomach ulcers, nausea, constipation and heartburn

- assists with insomnia, disturbed sleep patters and headaches

- Calcium, manganese and fluoride can strengthen bones and teeth

- Soothes babies with colic, stomach cramps and sleep problems, and because it is 100 per cent natural and not caffeinated, is safe for infants

- Alph Hydroxy and zinc encourage healthy, smooth skin and can be applied to itchy skin, eczema, sunburns, diaper rash and acne

- Increases the absorption of iron in the body

- Can help control your appetite to aid in weight loss

- High mineral content (iron, potassium, zinc, manganese and sodium) makes it ideal as a post-workout drink to quench thirst and restore the body’s equilibrium

- An effective assistance in the recovery of a hangover

The list keeps going, but I’m sure you get the idea. Rooibos has loads of fantastic health properties and provides a nice alternative for those looking for some variety and a change from its more well-known siblings, green and black tea.

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Snails and slugs are the mortal enemies of plant-loving gardeners the world over. You don't need chemicals to combat these slimy, plant-munching critters. Try surrounding your precious plants with rough material such as crunched-up eggshells, gravel and sand. Strips of copper can also keep pests away by giving them a mild electric shock. Until snails start wering sneakers, these two ideas should help you protect your plants naturally.
