The CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit, a popular item available at stores everywhere, contains 5% tremolite asbestos, a particularly dangerous form of this carcinogenic substance. (If Amazon places a link to the kit in this article, don't buy it!)
The kit is made in China (of course!), but Canadian politicians don't think Chine alone is to blame. Canada exports 200,000 tons of asbestos each year, a product which has been banned in countries around the world, but not in Canada.
There are also no regulations on testing for asbestos content in children's toys. None. Now on the one hand we chouldn't have to test for dangerous carcinogens in products intended for use by children, but since we obviously can't trust that these items are safe, why aren't the companies selling the toys liable for testing and quality control?
