I saw this video on Friday night and, in a fit of inspiration, I rushed over to my local craft store to pick up some supplies. Although my better judgement told me to sleep--as I was going on 36 hours without--my creative curiousity bid me at least make an attempt at knitting before I slept.
Excited, nervous, and mostly recovering from the relentless ridicule faced by a man purchasing knitting supplies, I watched the videos once more, and began. I'll be quite honest, my first attempts were dissapointing. But, within an hour I had the hang of it, and would have continued if it were not for fear of falling asleep and impaling myself on a knitting needle.
When I awoke, I got right back onto the horse, and I am proud to say (only a day later) that I am the proud owner of one completed scarf, and another in progress. Actually, I no longer own the first, as my sister seemed to like it even more than I did.
So, why exactly would I risk my masculinity? Well, I now have the technical ability to create mittens, scarves, sweaters, hats and much more; thereby cutting out the corporation, the transportation, and the dirty possibility of sweatshop labour. Also, I can choose my raw material, which is organic and sustainable. (I'm still looking for hemp yarn) I even found the process incredibly relaxing. Ultimately, I now own the means of production!
