The Food and Drug Administration in the United States are consisdering strengthening warnings for certain flu drugs due to the “abnormal psychiatric behavior” of some patients who have taken the medication.
The safety of Tamiflu and Relenza are under review by the FDA after symptoms including hallucinations and delirium were reported. Tamiflu is also being blamed for cases of “erratic behavior” including jumping from buildings. This isn’t the first time the safety of Tamiflu has been called into question: two years ago, Japan reported roughly a dozen deaths, including suicides of children who had been taking the drug.
Let me make sure I’m totally clear on this: Tamiflu is supposedly responsible for hallucinations and the suicides of children and the FDA labels this as “abnormal behavior?” I sincerely hope these “stronger label warnings” on the packaging aren’t so grossly understated. “Side effects for those ages 10 to 19 may include drowsiness, nausea or jumping from buildings resulting in death." Great, thanks for the heads-up.
